Rowing

Our club is primarily a racing club, we aim to compete at a high level and are continuously striving to become more successful year on year.  We also have club members who prefer to row for fun without the competitive element. We begin training with a development crew before continuing to either a racing crew or a social crew.

Ladies' rowing – Social rowing – Men's rowing – Junior rowing –  Racing & Selection

Ladies' and Men's Competitive Rowing
We currently have five racing crews in both men's and ladies racing; A crew, B crew, C crew, Vets (over 40) and Supervets (over 50) crew. During the winter months the training is often amalgamated to help develop all the rowers and then during December and January initial crew selections take place for the World Championships in May.

Regattas take place throughout the summer season and in September, the Ladies' and Men's racing crews take part in their respective championships in Newquay.

Our crews continue to go from strength to strength, with continuously improved championships results over recent years. We’ve seen a massive improvement which we hope to build on during this upcoming season.
Social Rowing
Social rowing or mixed club rowing is for members who do not wish to compete or who are coming through the ranks prior to crew selection or for those just looking to enjoy the social element of a fun row. Some of the boats we put together are for the fun of rowing others offer training sessions to help you improve your skills.

These tend to take place more in the summer than the winter months when daylight and tide times affect the number of rowing slots available. Once you become a member and have progressed from the development boat you are eligible to put your name down for any of these boats.
Junior Rowing
We have two junior crews – Under-14s and Under-16s. - Our junior crews are an integral part of our club, with junior members often travelling up through the ranks to row with our Men's and Ladies' Crews. This year we have a strong couple of crews coming together but we’re looking for more rowers who wish to try this exciting sport. The only restriction is they must be 11+ and able to reach the stretchers in the boat (the foot rests).

Junior on-water training takes place all year round. During the winter training in local gyms continues.

Our juniors compete at Hayle under 14 Championships and Newquay under 16 Championships, as well as club regattas throughout the season.

U18's get to join with adult crews to train and race. Some race events also have U18's rather than U16's, depending on the event organiser.
New Rowers
New rowers are welcome to row with us up to three times to see if they enjoy the sport. After this time we ask you to become a member. Our development boats go out throughout the winter and summer (weather/tides permitting). You’ll get to learn the basics at your own pace and can progress into the other crews once the coach has signed you off.

Racing & Selection

Most of our Club members enjoy and wish to partake in racing. However, gig rowing can be a demanding sport and so it’s important that rowers are selected based on their ability and taking into consideration the racing event and conditions.
Crews are formed during December and January for training at the World Pilot Gig Championships in May. We generally look to select 6 named rowers in each crew, with a squad-based approach where appropriate.

You will be asked to fill in a questionnaire each year to highlight your hopes and aims for the forthcoming year and also to state your intention and commitment to training. Although crew selection can be highly charged we do have a crew selection process to make it as fair and open as possible:

Crew Selection Process

As a member of Appledore Pilot Gig Club you are entitled to row on Club nights but are not automatically selected to crew in race events or for crew training. The selection process for choosing crews for training and for each event, will be carried out by the Coach, Captains and Coxswains. Crews will be formed on the basis of ability and suitability to crew at events.
